so, a roommate of mine got cornered by two republicans (also) mormon and they were pretty much arguing that we didn't have to be responsible with the earth/environment. because we have "domain" over it that meant to them it didn't matter if we pillaged it and left it to rot.

i was so furious. the next night, i came across this passage in my personal study: D&C 59

18 Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the abenefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to cgladden the heart;

19 Yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.

20 And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.

i concluded, thereby, that they were wrong.

and i'm right. we should advocate responsible use of the earth's resources. and fight against those who disrespect it.

this just seemed like a good place to air that dirty laundry.

That is the worst justification that I have ever heard to relinquish responsibility over what we do with the environment... Yes, because I have dominion of you... you must die little mister environment. Sorry but you are my domain. It is pretty much in writing, so DIE.

I can't believe anyone would actually vocalize such a rediculous view on the environment. Yeah, I think that section of D&C sets up a completely different theory.

i've heard the "domain" argument also and i prefer to reply with a little gem from moses

7:48 And it came to pass that Enoch looked upon the earth; and he heard a voice from the bowels thereof, saying: Wo, wo is me, the mother of men; I am pained, I am weary, because of the wickedness of my children. When shall I rest and be cleansed from the filthiness which is gone forth out of me?....

I don't want to be accountable for messing with mother earth. And I do believe the filthiness includes excess and irresponsible behaviour over that which we have been given responsibility.

I agree... and I don't think it would be a far stretch to now state that Hummers as we know them to be the fruits of such irresponsible excess, or at least a symbol of the attitude. With this I salute them.

Of course that link isn't exactly how I would say, but close...
